PLANNING A TRIP AT HOME OR ABROAD

Traveling at home or abroad? There are certain details you should consider.

Your travel may be short or extended but the time away increases your chance of picking up an infection.

Did you know some countries require proof of vaccination 10 days prior to entry?

Consult ARLINGTON TRAVEL CLINIC when planning your trip. Our expertise can make it a healthier and safer travel experience.

BASIC TRAVEL TIPS

  1. Obtain a passport.  Make two photocopies of it.  Leave on at home in a safe place and take a copy with you.  Keep it separate from your original passport.  You may not be able to obtain a passport without proof of yellow fever vaccinations for some locations.  If your passport is lost or stolen, use the photocopy to prove who you are. This may reduce the time it takes to replace it through the Embassy at your destination.

  2. Check out the Center for Disease Control website (www.cdc.gov).  Click on the heading "travel."  Identify your destination (s) and review the vaccinations that are suggested for the areas you plan to visit.

  3. Schedule an appointment with the Arlington Travel Clinic.  Our staff will assist you in determining which vaccinations might be necessary.  Some immunizations require 2 doses 14 - 21 days apart.  Most should be administered at least four weeks in advance of traveling to your destination.

  4. Contact the State Department through its website (www.travel.state.gov) Check for any travel warnings for the location you are visiting.  At this site, you may register with the Embassy for your travel plans prior to departure.

  5. Prepare a health kit to take with you.  Carry a list of your current medications and any necessary amount for your stay, with an additional four day supply.  Keep the list in your wallet describing the dosage and the frequency with which you take them.  Check with the Embassy as some locations may be considered illegal drugs in the country you are visiting.  It would also be a good idea to carry a letter from your doctor explaining any medical condition you have and the medications you are taking.

  6. Take a record of your vaccinations.  Some countries require that you receive inoculations at least 10 days before entry into a country.  Remember that many vaccinations require two doses 2 - 4 weeks apart.
