TRAVEL PREPARATIONS AND TIPS FOR TRAVELING

Take medications in their original containers or have your pharmacist prepare your medication in containers with just enough for your trip plus four days.

Register with the embassy in the country you plan to visit.  Embassy staff can assist you in many ways should something unusual occur during your stay.

Make out an itinerary of your travel plans and leave a copy with a friend or family member

Familiarize yourself with local laws and customs for your destination.

Drinking beverages should come from cans or bottles.  Water treatment using chlorine might not destroy viruses or parasitic organisms.  Remember that ice made from contaminated water will remain contaminated.  Food washed in unsafe water is unsafe.  For more information, go to www.cdc.gov and click on "safe food and water."

When you arrive at your location, attempt to acclimate yourself to the time change.  Dress appropriately for the weather.  In sunny locations, wear sunblock, limit your exposure time, drink plenty of safe water, and wear a hat.

While you travel, do leg exercises to prevent blood clot formation.  Begin by bending and straightening your legs and repeat this several times every 30 minutes.  If possible, get up and walk.  Drink plenty of water while in flight and after the flight, if you develop a swollen, painful leg or if you have difficulty breathing, go to an emergency department.

Eat foods that have been recently cooked and that are hot.  Use the guideline, "Boil it, Cook it, Peel it, or Forget it."

Use insect repellent with DEET.  Take creams to treat bites and antihistamine tablets to reduce any reaction to bites.

If traveling in the North American continent with a pet, you may need a health certificate and proof of vaccinations for your pet.  Check with your veterinarian.

Avoid unprotected sex which can expose you to HIV, hepatitis B and other sexually transmitted diseases.

Increasingly, there are a number of countries which require that foreigners be tested for HIV prior to entry into their country.  Usually this is required for long-term visitors, students, and workers.  Check with the embassy in the country you are visiting and learn about specific entry requirements.  Click on the links below for information before you leave.  Go to http://www.state.gov/countries and continue to click on the links until you get to your travel destination.
