INJURY OR ILLNESS ABROAD

Motor vehicle injuries and death are higher in developing countries.  Practice defensive driving.

Other major causes of injury are pedestrian accidents, fires and drowning.  Check your accommodations for smoke detectors.  Remember that when escaping from a fire, crawl toward the exit as close to the ground as possible to limit smoke inhalation.

If you are planning on swimming or boating, wear a life jacket.

Be careful when going out at night or when going out alone.

Access specific warnings for various destinations on www.travel.state.gov.

Contact your US Embassy abroad if you become seriously ill or injured.  A US Consulate Office can assist you in locating appropriate medical services and help transfer funds from the United States.

Contact your health insurance agent to inquire if your policy covers you outside the United States.  Remember to carry your insurance card and carry a claim form with you.  There are some companies that provide travel insurance.

SENIOR TRAVELERS

Contact AARP at www.aarp.com for information on foreign health insurance.

DEATH OVERSEAS

Should a companion die overseas, contact a US Embassy Consulate Officer.  In foreign countries, death certificates are written in that country's language and according to local regulations.  This document may be unacceptable to some US insurance companies and for estate purposes.

The Consulate Office can issue a Report of Death of a US Citizen Abroad.  This will provide all necessary facts concerning the death.  The document will include custody of personal effects and disposition of the remains.  This form is generally used in the US rather than the foreign-issues death certificate.

ILLNESS AFTER YOU RETURN HOME

If you return from a trip and experience illness with symptoms such as fever, vomiting, diarrhea or skin irritation, contact your physician.  A fever after returning from a malaria-endemic area is a medical emergency.
